Japanese Woodblock Print Process

This is a short film of Kawase Hasui (1883-1857) demonstrating the Ukioye process of woodblock print making.  The film was made in 1955 in Japan, dubbed in English.  It is about 41 minutes in length, but if you are short on time, begin on the 7:00 minute mark which picks up with his initial sketching for the print.  The film continues to the creation of the final print.

Here is another video of a contemporary printer, Keizaburo Matsuzaki, demonstrating the woodblock printing process using original Utamaro (1753-1806) woodblocks:  https://youtu.be/t8uF3PZ3KGQ?si=ZCMTqT8b7yzNGMv3.
